Pervez Alam left Pakistan in 1971 and arrived in the UK with a vision. Born in Nairobi in 1956, Pervez had always been a vocal and active member of his community in Pakistan with a keen interest in politics and concern for his countrymen. Once in England, the opportunities that motivated him the most were those which allowed him to continue to engage with his community as much as possible.

Drawing from his experiences in Pakistan, he understood the unique requirements of ethnic communities settling in the UK. While the textiles industry was going from strength to strength in the northern towns of England, the comforting feeling of being able to eat with family — and the rewarding job of sourcing and providing halal food in a new country, were what resonated with Pervez the most. He could bring the flavours of Pakistan to the UK, he thought.

And so began Worldwide Foods in 1985.

A halal supermarket serving ethnic food. With the help of his younger brothers, the business expanded rapidly to become a grocery chain that is now the leading halal supermarket grocery chain in the UK with outlets across the North and Midlands.

The aim was simple: provide a wide range of fresh products at affordable prices and take special care of customers. While Worldwide Foods’ origins lay in serving the South Asian community, it grew to expand Middle Eastern, African, East Asian and even South American lines. Mr Alam hadn’t just brought flavours of Pakistan to the country but now flavours of the world – and lived up to his company name!
